Teaching Kids Disc Golf

This week and the last week of August I am helping to teach disc golf to some kids in a day camp program at Hough Elementary School in Vancouver. About 40 kids each day are enrolled in the program and our goal is to introduce them to the game and teach them a few skills they can use if they get out and play at a local course with their families.

Software that is useful

So I recently found Evernote, an web/mobile/desktop application that easily stores (and synchronizes) notes, web clippings, etc. I've started using it to take a clip of a web page I want to use for research later or to keep track of those pesky details from meetings, church, computer settings, etc. You can also use an Outlook add-in to post an e-mail to Evernote. The fact that your notes are available anywhere you have access to a computer makes this a real winner. The user interface is also very very intuitive and easy to use.

What's new in May

Hey there everyone. Just hanging out and thought I would write a post to update you on Steve. I'm still playing disc golf. Still enjoying my family. Looking forward to nice weather for spring and summer. I changed the oil in my truck today and adjusted the ignition timing. It runs like a top now. Last weekend I built a small fence like structure by our back entrance to hide the hose reel, electrical box, phone box, etc. Work is going well. Four things...

I got tagged and this looked simple enough so I'll do it.
FOUR...

  • jobs I've had: Sheep farmer, Camp Director, 911 Dispatcher, IT guru
  • movies I've watched more than once: What's Up Doc, Gone in 60 seconds, Princess Bride, Goonies
  • places I've lived: Astoria, OR, Vista, CA, Issaquah, WA, Vancouver, USA
  • TV shows I watch: The Office, Chuck (come back Chuck!), NASCAR, ER
  • places I've been: Louisiana (road trip so everywhere in between), New York, Cabo San Lucas, Tofino, BC

I made the papers

The Columbian Newspaper sent a reporter out to visit our disc golf preview day at Pleasant Valley park on April 12th. This is the video they posted on their web site to accompany the article.

Chris (Chompy) did a great job explaining why he was there and the sport. Lorraine and I did okay. The first player teeing off is Spencer for those of you that can't tell by the back of his head.

Disc Golf in Vancouver

I was able to promote and run a disc golf preview day in Vancouver at a park that hopefully will be home to a permanent disc golf course. For pictures and more details please see my vancouver clark web site. http://vcdg.org/

Gaining Momentum

I've been working hard to very hard over the past couple weeks to make a disc golf course happen in Clark County. This week I got permission from Battle Ground School District and Vancouver/Clark Parks to hold a tournament at Pleasant Valley Park. The date is April 12th and I am going to rent baskets to set up the course and use it for my Spring League Finale and hold the course open afterwards for neighbors and friends that aren't involved in the league. I really hope to use it as a kick off to get final approval and start raising serious money to build a course there permanently.

What's eating your disc space?

I've been using WinDirStat for quite some time now to find those huge files that are eating up my disc space. I recommend this simple to use program that doesn't even need to be "installed" on your computer. You can just copy the files to a directory or a flash memory device and run it from there.
